"The Ages of Love" is three stories about love at different ages: Youth, Maturity and the Age of Reason. Youth; introduces us to Roberto who is a young and ambitious lawyer who is going to marry Sara. His whole life is perfectly planned out. During a expropriation which he is in charge of, he meets Micol, a gorgeous and provocative young woman from a small village in Tuscany. This is when things start to get complicated. In Maturity we are introduced to Fabio, a famous anchorman who has been the perfect husband for 25 years. At a party one night, he meets Eliana, a femme fatale full of surprises. This one-night stand proves to be more than what he bargained for when she refuses to leave. With The Age of Reason we Adrian (De Niro) who is an American art history professor who moved to Rome after his divorce. He's friends with Augusto, the building's concierge, whose ebullient daughter Viola (Bellucci) is about to disrupt his peaceful existence and relight his fire.
Note for note, this is basically an Italian version of "Love, Actually". It has some cute moments with attractive people going back and forth on the various passions and temptations put in front of them. It hardly says anything meaningful or deep but it moves along at a fairly light and fluffy pace even though it is terribly self indulgent at times with no depth to it at all. If it was an English language film you'd expect Katherine Heigl to show up at some point as it is all very much about the lowest common denominator. Cute but pointless, and while it may work for the Italian audiences there just aren't enough interesting people to grab a North American audience as most of these characters are pretty selfish.
The three stories blended together well enough, all be it very thinly and it was only the first one that really connected at all, if only because of the recognizable faces from Robert De Niro and Monica Bellucci. Both characters were fairly selfish as the older intellectual falls in love with the daughter of his friend who was working in Paris as an exotic dancer and lying to her father about it. As a man, I can't honestly fault De Niro for having a chance at a love scene with the ravishing Monica Bellucci but the script on how each of these characters fell in love was thread bare and revolved more around passion then love. While this may play well for a European audience, for a Canadian one it comes off contrived and a little forced and honestly none of these characters were terribly likable.
At the end of the day, there are better romantic comedies out there then "The Ages of Love" because nothing about this film felt nice or even terribly genuine it was just a bit of a mess.
